A Penguin's Guide to Cooking

by Stuffed Penguin Pengie

Also known as "What I do when Ardant's really hungry".

Being a university student's penguin, it's hard to live life and eat balanced meals. If it's that bad for me, imagine what it would be like for a university student like Ardant. Never having time to eat real meals and not wanting to fork out lots of money for meal plans, there needs to be healthy, nutritious alternatives that are quick to cook. And of course easy, because Ardant's no chef. Well, perhaps I'm being mean, his food is edible. Barely.

I offer below a list of quick and easy things to do when your university student is hungry. I'll have to admit that Ardant came up with most of these things - I have determined the proper way to cook them after suffering through the inedible versions for a while.

Scrambled Eggs?
Scrambled Eggs?

Eggs. Eggs are perhaps the simplest things to make, and much can be created from them. As long as you're comfortable stealing them from your feathered-bird cousins, you can make quite a feast, and quickly too. You can always do your very own version of "all-day breakfast", with two eggs, sausage, and a slab of potato. Or you could even try "fridge-leftover omelettes". Find all the onions, mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, and other vegetables on the verge of expiry in your fridge. Throw them in a pan, and mix in 3 beaten eggs. Add salt, top with cheese. Delicious.

Not so Instant noodles. Yes, instant noodles make a good meal, as long as you get the kind you need to cook (not the ones you just add hot water to). Throw instant noodles into a pot. Cook for 2 minutes. Throw in some quick-cooking vegetables (Chinese Bok-Choi work great), add sliced sausage or other prepared meat. Remove from heat, crack an egg into it, and cover with a lid for 2 minutes. You've got an five minute dinner ready to go!

Pasta a la Ardant. This one is a classic. Take a pot of water, and boil it. Add a bit of salt. Dump the pasta in. Cook until it looks (and tastes) right. Now, for the sauce: either use your usual cans or try this Ardant favourite: Marinate chicken breast slices in your favourite marinade. Open two cans of Cambell's cream of chicken soup, and one can-full of milk. Heat until it has the usual soup-like texture (just a bit creamier). Turn the heat way down (2 - 3) and throw chicken into the soup. Cover and let simmer for 10-15 minutes or until chicken is cooked to tender goodness. Add frozen peas and/or mushrooms. Dump in recently cooked pasta and stir until pasta is evenly covered in creamy goodness. Remove from heat and enjoy.

Salisbury Steak with Fried Onions. Chop those onions! Keep them cold to avoid crying. Slice them into rings. Throw them into a frying pan with a bit of oil and let them sizzle for a bit. Find those elusive hamburger patties in your freezer. Throw one or two into the frying pan and rearrange the onions to cover them. Pour a little bit of water in there to get the steam going. Cover and cook until hamburger is cooked throughout. Serve with a generous heaping of mashed potatoes and frozen peas.

Condensed Milk Toast. A favourite dessert of Ardant, invented (partially) by him. Buy bread unsliced (or if you're lazy, just buy it sliced). Slice into thick slices. Say, double or triple normal size. Buy a can of condensed milk. Heat oven to 500° F. Cut slice of bread (diagonally) into quarters. Don't cut all the way through. Spoon condensed milk onto the bread, spreading evenly (think peanut butter). Put bread into oven for about 5 - 10 minutes, or until condensed milk starts to bubble and sides of bread get toasted. (You can also try this in a toaster oven).

Now, as with all cooking diversions, stuffed penguins might want to get help from their owners. But other than that, enjoy!
