Falling Leaves, Falling Temps

by Staff Writer Bamf

Colorful leaves, bright colored gourds, brisk weather. All signs that autumn is in full swing. In many parts of the United States, harvests are nearing completion, leaves are falling rapidly to the ground, and frost is nippng the grass in the early morning. For many, autumn is their favorite season, while others grieve the impending doom of winter.

Autumn can be a wonderful time of year to plan outdoor activities. The weather is usually pleasantly warm during the day. For our stuffed penguin friends, this translates to the perfect time for them to be outside. They won't spontaneously combust as they would in the heat of summer, nor will their lungs freeze with the cold of winter (although this shouldn't bother regular penguins).

What can you do with your stuffed penguin during the autumn months? Here are a few activities that you can share with your friends, family, or that special stuffed penguin.

Leaf Jumping. Who doesn't love jumping in a pile of leaves? Imagine the thrill your penguin buddy will have as he or she hurtles through the air and crashes into a huge pile of leaves. Listen to the giggles as their little stuffed bodies gently push through the leaves to the hidden ground below. Watch with laughter as they try to burrow into the pile of leaves. It's cheap and easy to do. If you don't have trees in your yard, then go to a nearby park and play with the leaves there.

Pressing Leaves. When you are done playing in the leaves, take some time to inspect the leaves. Leaves come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Pick some out that you like and have your penguin pick a few as well. The leaves you pick can soon be decorations for your room.

Now that you have picked out your leaves and taken them home, it's time to press them. You will need some wax paper and an iron. If you are a youngster, you might need some help from mom or dad. The object is to preserve the leaves in the wax paper. The easiest way to do this is to place a thick towel (folded a couple of times) on a table. Place a piece of wax paper large enough for your leaves on the towel. Then, arrange your leaves on the wax paper. Place another sheet of wax paper on top of the leaf arrangement and then use the iron to heat the wax paper sealing the two sheets together. You should make sure your stuffed penguin doesn't get too close to avoid singeing a wing or a beak. Once the wax paper has cooled, tack it up on your wall or door for cheap and easy decorations.

Visit A Farm. Since autumn is harvest time, farmers usually want to make a little money by selling their products. Many farms hold events at their farms to bring people in for some fun in the hopes they buy some fresh grown produce. Events at the farm usually include hay rides, hay or corn mazes and fresh produce samples (warm apple cider, yum!). It's a great way to meet new people (who may have a stuffed penguin as well) and spend a few hours outside enjoying nature. Oh, and pick up those home-grown apples and pumpkins to use for Thanksgiving dinners.

Shop for Christmas. Is the weather too cold or dreary to enjoy the outdoors? It's never to early to start buying for Christmas. Take your stuffed penguin with you to the mall for some help in selecting gifts for your friends and family. Don't forget to stop by the coffee shop for some warm spiced cider or hot cocoa.

For the most part, autumn activities are cheap and fun to do. Your stuffed penguin will really like getting out of the house for a few hours to enjoy the outdoors. We all know how stuffy it gets being cooped up all the time. So, surprise your stuffed penguin and plan an autumnal activity that both of you will enjoy.
